Total Refreshment Records is proud to announce Vels Trio’s debut EP.
Truly one of the bands that most aptly represent the vanguard of the current British jazz scene at the moment, Vels Trio have
been running the underground scene riot with their infectious contemporary jazz grooves.
Yellow Ochre EP demonstrates the virtuoso jazz talents of the band while maintaining the trippy hip-hop inspired funk that has come to define their sound. The slender keys of Jack Stephen Oliver glide over Dougal Taylor's breakbeat fire landing with Cameron Dawson's funky wah bass lines all culminating in an explosion of synths and tasty licks.
“40 Point” sees a guest spot from UK's leading saxophonist and Mercury Award nominee Shabaka Hutchings (Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, Shabaka & The Ancestors), who decorates the tight rhythm section with his unique pulsating melodies.
“Godzilla” takes the listener on a journey across time and space with reflective melodies before dropping into the heaviest bass groove that carries you up and beyond.
Ending with “Yellow Ochre Pt2” the jazz-funk fusion of Lonnie Smith can be heard filtering through an array of influences from Badbadnotgood to J-Dilla to Robert Glasper that Vels Trio manage to effortlessly encapsulate with their own distinct sound.
Yellow Ochre EP transcends any preconceived notions of jazz, highlighting the virtuoso musicianship of each band member and holding it all together with tenacious feet shuffling tunes.
